Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels

8th November 2016

The tradition and madness of The Flaming Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary.

While most people in the UK are gathered around a bonfire on the 5th November, watching fireworks, the folk of an East Devon town are instead setting light to old barrels and running with them on their backs.

While research continues into this bazaar tradition, it is believed to be a pagan in origin, perhaps designed to scare away evil spirits in a similar way to Halloween.

If it is designed to scare, then it doesn't appear to be working, thousands of people now travel great distances to see the spectacle. However if you were mad enough to want to try this for yourself, its already too late, only people born and raised in the town can have the honour of running with the flaming barrels!
